The global Sufi campaign against the offensive misappropriation of their sacred symbol by the Italian stylist Roberto Cavalli continued today. A demonstration took place in Paris on the first day of clearance sales on june 25th near l’Elysée (the President’s residence) and place Vendôme. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of Roberto Cavalli’s shop to demand the withdrawal of JustCavalli logo from his products which the Sufis consider as a plagiarism of their sacred symbol protected by TradeMark law since 1982.
One demonstrator described the emblem as signifying the heritage of humanity due to it’s deep iconography. Koran verses and God’s name are drawn within, and it use by Cavalli is a great offense to the values that the emblem
represent. “we are more offended by Roberto Cavalli’s behavior because the Italian stylist had made no efforts to change the
curvature and proportions of the JustCavalli logo so that we had a perfect superposition between the Sufi emblem and his logo,
this made no doubt of the plagiarism of the Sufi Symbol”
The use of the logo in on bikinis and underwear greatly angers the Sufi students since it is an emblem that they hold during prayers.Similar behaviors from Roberto Cavalli had been reported when in 2004 he printed images of Hindu deities on his underwear and which generated a wave of Hindu protests arround the world. Since it is not Cavalli’s first time attacking faith – this makes the Sufis doubt the stylist’s real motivations.
The campaign #TakeOffJustLogo on social networks (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, change.org…) is followed now by thousands of people online. Demonstrations are organized by Sufi students in many cities of Europe and USA. Many of them have already announced for the coming weeks in Cologne, London, Berlin, Cannes, Vancouver, Milan, Chicago and Göteborg.
